Acute Hip Pathologies:

Acute causes are generally a result of Physical Trauma
  1. Fracture
  2. Dislocation
  3. Sprain & Strain 

Chronic Hip Pathologies:

Chronic Orthopaedic hip Pathologies cause long-term pain and disability in the hip joint. This greatly affects a person’s Mobility and Quality of life. 

  1. Osteoarthritis. This is a Degenerative joint disease that causes the Cartilage in the hip joint to break down, resulting in Pain, Stiffness, and reduced Mobility.

  2. Hip Dysplasia. This is a Congenital Abnormality, in which the hip joint is abnormally shaped, resulting in Pain, Instability, and a higher risk of Arthritis.

  3. Femoroacetabular Impingement. In this condition, the bones of the hip rub against each other, causing pain and generally leads to early onset Osteoarthritis.

  4. Avascular Necrosis (AVN). In this condition, the blood supply to the head of the Femur is disrupted, leading to death of the Femoral head, causing Pain, Stiffness, and Collapse of the joint.

  5. Snapping Hip Syndrome. In this condition, the tendon snaps over the hip joint during movement, causing Pain and a Snapping or Popping sensation.

  6. Trochanteric Bursitis. In this condition, there is inflammation of the bursae, this is a small Fluid-Filled sac that cushion the hip joint, causing pain and tenderness over the outside of the hip.

  7. Labral Tears. In this condition, there are tears in the soft tissue ring that lines the inside of the hip Socket, causing Pain, Instability, and a Catching or locking Sensation in the hip joint.

Treatment for chronic hip Pathologies may involve Physical Therapy, Medication, Injections, or, in severe cases, Surgery.

Symptoms of Hip Pathologies include:

  1. Pain in the hip or the groin area
  2. Stiffness of the hip and reduced range of motion
  3. Swelling and tenderness 
  4. Weakness in the leg
  5. Clicking sound in the hip
  6. Difficulty in walking
  7. Difficulty in weight bearing on the affected hip.
  8. Numbness or tingling in the affected leg or foot.

Diagnosis

In order to assess Shoulder Pathology properly. A detailed History, Examination and Imaging are required. Generally a X-ray, MRI or Ultrasound are needed to identify the underlying cause.

Treatment

These symptoms can be Progressive and Worsen over time if the underlying condition is not treated.
