What is Knee Arthroscopy?

Knee Arthroscopy is a procedure in which a small camera is inserted into the knee joint through a small incision which will allow the Orthopedic surgeon to see inside of the knee and make repairs to the joint using Surgical instruments. This procedure can be used to diagnose and treat numerous knee conditions such as inflamed knee tissues, damaged ligaments or torn cartilage.

Knee Arthroscopy is used to treat a variety of knee conditions

Meniscus tears.  This is a condition were there are tears in the cartilage cushioning the knee joint which can cause pain and swelling. Arthroscopy can be used to mend or remove the damaged cartilage.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tears.  These injuries can cause the knee joint to be unstable. Arthroscopy can be used to rebuild or mend a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament.

Posterior Cruciate Ligament Tears. This Injuries can also cause the knee joint to be unstable. Arthroscopy can be used to mend or rebuild a Posterior Cruciate Ligament.

Articular Cartilage Damage. An injury to the smooth, outer layer of the bone that may cause knee pain and difficulty in moving the knee. Arthroscopy can be used to remove or smooth out the damaged cartilage.

Knee Osteoarthritis. Arthroscopy can be used to separate loose fragments of the bone or cartilage and smooth out uneven areas of the joint that causes pain.

Loose bodies. Unattached pieces of the bone or cartilage may course pain in the knee and locking. Arthroscopy can be used to take out these unattached bodies from the joint.

Inflammation. The process of Arthroscopy may be used to take out the inflamed tissue from the knee joint and unload excess fluid.

It is important to bear in mind that knee Arthroscopy is not for everyone and dependent on underlying pathology. Book an appointment with Dr NM van der Berg, an Orthopaedic Surgeon. He will consult you, do the necessary imaging, allowing you to have a better understanding of your condition, and discuss the options available to you.

Some of the benefits of knee arthroscopy are:

Minimally Invasive. Arthroscopy is a slightly invasive procedure that needs small incisions. This decrease the rick of infections and scarring.

Faster Recovery. Because it is minimally invasive, there is a faster recovery time. This allows you to resume to normal activities faster.

Improved Diagnosis. Knee arthroscopy is also more accurate in making a diagnosis of knee pathologies. More so than X-rays and MRI’s.

Effective Treatment. Knee Arthroscopy can be a beneficial treatment for numerous knee conditions such as torn cartilage, inflammation and ligament injuries. This can produce excellent results, improve or eliminate pain, and result in improved joint function.
